When Juju and his supporters sing about killing farmers, I am sure the image they have in their minds is a man like Eugene Terre’Blanche. The so-called “boer” — stuck in his verkrampte politics. A man who defines himself by racial rhetoric and old ideas. When the AWB talk about tooling up for the third […]
David J Smith
David Smith is a world famous artist and a British Olympic hammer thrower. He is a curler for Scotland and Manitoba. A pro wrestler fondly known as the British Bulldog. A Canadian economist and a Mormon missionary they call the Sweet Singer of Israel. He is a British historian and a bishop. David Smith is the biographer of HG Wells, a professor of physics, a composer and a music teacher at Yale. He played rugby for Samoa, England and New Zealand. He created the Melissa worm, a deadly computer virus. He is the Guardian's man in Africa, he starred in a reality TV show and shot his way to silver in the 600m military rifle prone position at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp.
But this isn't that David Smith. This is the blog of the other David Smith. David J Smith. The one from Durban by the Sea. The one who lives in Amsterdam. Yes, him. The David Smith who likes to write about himself in the third person.

Would you come to my terror camp?
I went for a run tonight. And I had a business idea. Terror camp. It is like one of those fitness boot camps. But run by jihadists. Now before you click on the home button or do something silly like go read an article about Juju or ET, let me lay this plan out for […]
Yes, this is the definitive ET article
So like everyone in the whole country is writing articles about ET. A forest of opinion has been spewed forth. The internet is gigaflopping all over the pavement with blogs, vlogs, tweets, status updates and posts about Mr Terre’Blanche. Even Die Antwoord would be jealous. If you are trying to avoid this info-tsunami, this maelstrom […]
April fool this, Mr News Guy!
Tomorrow is April Fool’s Day. The day when newspapers try to catch us out with whacky stories and tall tales. The day when fiendish hacks ply their wily trade to fool our pre-caffeinated brains. Sucking us in with official looking headlines, well-crafted copy and photoshopped images. Feeding us fantastical “facts” that have us reaching for […]
SpeakZA: Bloggers for a free press
A message from a whole bunch of peeps, read it, share it and all that. Last week, shocking revelations concerning the activities of ANC Youth League Spokesperson Nyiko Floyd Shivambu came to the fore. According to a letter published in various news outlets, a complaint was laid by 19 political journalists with the secretary-general of […]
Verashni Pillay: SA’s newest boeremeisie
Yesterday, while perusing the news, I discovered a small announcement buried somewhere on the M&G website. It stated that columnist Verashni Pillay, along with a whole bunch of other journalists, had been reclassified as a boer journalist by a special decree from ANCYL leader Julius Malema. And as we all know, what Juju wants, Juju […]
Mr Siphiwe Nyanda, what is your secret?
Dear Mr Nyanda It has come to my attention that you and I share a common interest. We like to rock overpriced hotels on someone else’s dime. Please don’t tell anyone this, but the way I do it is to convince large multinationals that if they want to sell truckloads of their products they […]
Mandela or Madiba, which one do you want?
In history there is the truth and then there is the story. And rarely are they the same thing. But does the truth really matter? Does it matter that this man or that man was fallible? That he made loads of mistakes and was always scared. Or that he went to his grave pissing and […]
African land grabs: New colonialism or African apathy?
Across Africa large tracts of land are being sold or leased to foreign countries and companies to grow food, flowers and biofuels. This land is handed over for a song and offers food and resource security to the richer parts of the world — Europe, the Middle East and Asia. But denies thousands of African […]
Did you achieve nothing today?
We’ve all had those days. You know the ones. Where after a full day’s work, after actually having tried to achieve something, we end up with nothing. Those days where we hold the rudder tight, pull the sails taut and struggle against the wind, only to realise our final port is in the opposite direction. […]
Dear Mr White Conservative
It seems you were right. The natives are out to get us. I have tried to help them out, teach them a thing or two about democracy and living the rainbow dream, but all they have done is taunt me. I put on their bloody T-shirt and they laughed at me. I played their records […]
To the cat-basket born
Let me tell you of two cats that I have come to know quite well over the last year or so. Doctor Poo and Mister Hanky of Oud Zuid, Amsterdam. Doctor Poo is an academic. A feline entomologist. Softly spoken and reserved, he shies from the public eye and spends most days working on his […]
