America, Nato and the European Union might want to rethink their approach to the issue of Georgia, South Ossetia and Abkhazia. As things stand now they are, in condemning Russia for recognising the two breakaway former Georgian territories, practising double standards.

Correct me if I’m wrong but weren’t the USA and her mates the same parties that were celebrating the breakaways of Macedonia, Croatia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Slovenia from Serbia? If that be the case why shouldn’t these two territories, who have clearly indicated their desire to secede from Georgia, be recognised and welcomed in the same way?

I have no problem in understanding the need or desire for what was formerly Yugoslavia to break up into the components we now recognise as separate states, but I am struggling to fathom why the USA and her allies have a problem recognising the exact same principle in the case of Georgia. Where is the difference in the case of South Ossetia and Abkhazia to justify the approach being adopted?

In fairness the populations of both territories should be given the opportunity to vote on their own future, the results of which should be respected and recognised by the United Nations.

In both cases that will be to remain separate from Georgia and to gain independence from Georgia.
