Isn’t it ironic that one of the cornerstones in the fight against apartheid was sporting isolation? The fact that South African team selections were based on race was so abhorrent to the international sporting community that the country was sent packing until it got its house in order. The International Olympic Committee has confirmed inter […]

Get the Stofile out your ears; it has to be Oregan Hoskins
South Africa and the Springboks, despite the interference and politicking of Mike Stofile and his cabal, took a trip to France and emerged as the world champions. Who can ever forget those wonderful scenes as our president was hoisted shoulder-high by the second rugby team to unite a nation? A shining light (sans power failure) […]
Shaun Pollock, the man for all seasons; Hansie a King’s ransom of insanity
On June 1 2002, Hansie Cronje, the former South African cricket captain and the man whose life had been destroyed by the King commission into match-fixing, was killed in a plane crash in the Outeniqua Mountains. My brother kneels, so saith Kabir, To stone and brass in heathen wise, But in my brother’s voice I […]

McCain vs Romney, Clinton vs Obama: Super Bowl 42 will identify the next US president
Call me crazy (OK, crazier than usual) but doesn’t the Democratic and Republican primaries remind you of the race for this year’s Super Bowl? First off we have the NFC where the New York Giants (has to be Hillary Clinton as the Senator from New York) beat the Green Bay Packers to reach the grand […]
Zuma avoided Tyson, now Mbeki must void Erwin
“Accountability”, for the benefit of Public Enterprises Minister Alec Erwin and others, is the acceptance of responsibility for your actions and decisions — in this case, the national electricity disaster. It is a debacle that dwarfs all other problems facing this country and impacts directly or indirectly on the lives of every South African. Opposition […]
ANC MP proposes legalising prostitution. The feelgood factor?
With ANC president Jacob Zuma confirming that the World Cup 2010 will go ahead despite the current energy crisis, I was delighted to read in the Sowetan that an ANC MP is proposing that sex workers be legalised. Please read the article; it’s short, but it’s a classic. For example, MP George Lekgetho told Parliament: […]
Apostasy born of hubris: The John Minto story
It was with no little anger that I read New Zealander John Minto’s open letter to President Thabo Mbeki. In it, he outlines his reasons for refusing to accept the OR Tambo Award on behalf of Halt All Racist Tours and the anti-apartheid movement of New Zealand — an honour given to non-South Africans in […]
ANC collective may make it more difficult for Zuma to retain economic policies
It comes as no surprise to me that JZ is charming the pants off the media down in Davos — he is, after all, the most charismatic leader this country has ever produced (and that includes Madiba): http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id =6&art_id=vn20080125025211403C858475 http://www.thetimes.co.za/PrintEdition/ BusinessTimes/Article.aspx?id=692199 At Polokwane, we watched him strutting his stuff and it really was exciting fare […]
Why I hate Kaizer Chiefs and Manchester United
There is nothing wishy-washy about my support for anything sporting. When I follow rugby, cricket or soccer I watch it on my own — I can’t stand the thought of having some doos, who thinks he’s a maven on sport, sprouting crap at me while I’m trying to concentrate. The fact that I swear like […]
Evil Kerviel: Société Générale’s rogue trader
Jackie Mason (who links his blog to ours through yours truly) once asked: What is the difference between a Jewish stuntman and an ordinary one? A normal stuntman, like Evel Knievel, is the guy who jumps his motorcycle over 20 buses while a Jewish stuntman is the guy who takes in $20-million and shows a […]
I have come not to bury Eskom, but to praise it
From the makers of “Eskom power alerts: How can we help you“, “Eskom II : This time with solar water heaters” and “Oh Eskom! My Eskom!” comes a Malt Dizzy film, Broke Back Mounting Ladder. Barry Wrongun sent us this short review : Arnold Bagel is a typical Johannesburg northern-suburbs businessman (imports/exports … something like […]
