Jacob Zuma’s interview with the Financial Times of London, wherein he expressed the view that it is the ANC rather than the government that is the centre of power, has given rise to a call for early elections by the trade union Solidarity. In the interview with the British newspaper, JZ claims that the national […]

Zuma and the death-penalty referendum
A High Court Justice in Botswana — nothing to do with the genius who was the first to be evicted from the Big Brother Africa house — has sentenced Michael Molefe of Soweto and a citizen of Botswana to be hanged for the murder of two Zimbabweans seven years ago. The reports of the dramatic […]
Zuma meets Jewish community while Afrikaners meet prejudice
Why is it that we tend to look at the components rather than the whole when assessing South Africa? Isolate the negatives and aggregate them into a false reality that, looking forward, will translate into a bleak future without any prospects of redemption. Jacob Zuma’s meeting with the Jewish community was not only a success […]
YouTube rape videos, castrating taxi drivers and a woman named Gugu
A 25-year-old mother of two from south London whose drink had been spiked was raped by three boys who filmed the incident on a cellphone and then uploaded it on to YouTube. The website, immediately after being informed of this, pulled it off but not before about 600 people had already seen it. Unfortunately in […]
Lufthansa planes that give you wind
Every time someone tells me that flying is safer than driving, I tell them my cousin was killed in a car crash — a plane fell on him. I mean, FFS, does anyone really enjoy flying? If they do, then maybe they can explain why they look so relieved when we land. I hate it […]
‘Abortion is a racist, genocidal act’
“Abortion is a racist, genocidal act”. This view was expressed by Dr Alveda King, niece of Dr Martin Luther King Jr, at an event in Washington recently. Her aim is to end modern day claims that her famous uncle was in any way pro-abortion. As most of you would be aware, abortion is very much […]
An hour with the PSL’s Thapelo Moloantoa
Thapelo “Jigga” Moloantoa is the web editor and communications assistant of the Premier Soccer League’s official website. He is also a full-on bagel (the male version of a kugel). Before I catch anyone sniggering, let me break it to you — the number of black kugels and bagels is growing exponentially by the day (remember, […]

Separatism, federalism or multiculturalism?
Whatever disgust I felt at the conduct of the Forum of Black Journalists, it paled into insignificance when compared with the animals from the University of the Free State. Whatever drove those morons to carry out this latest outrage is irrelevant. They have to face criminal charges. Didn’t your mommies teach you basic human decency? […]
Butana Komphela and Arendse: Mutiny on the bounty
You put the slime in the coconut — you drink it all up … Sports and recreation portfolio committee chairperson Butana Komphela has demanded that any players who rose up against Norman Arendse’s insistence that the cricket squad to Bangladesh be more in line with transformation be given their marching orders. Once again I feel […]
US on the brink of its first black president; SA sweating on its third
Isn’t it ironic that the United States, thought to be at least a couple of elections away from being ready to accept its first black president, stands on the brink of doing just that while South Africa, with its 70% black majority, is sweating on the candidate chosen by the ANC for our next president? […]
Cognitive dissonance of Chancellor House audit
Jon Qwelane’s column of February 18 2008, “Batten the hatches of escape”, expresses his concern — and no little anger — at the number of people, particularly those with skills, who are leaving South Africa. He asks whether it is not possible, on the one hand, for the government to make it more difficult for […]
