Et tu Ruth?
Ruth Kelly, the UK transport secretary, dropped a political time bomb on British Prime Minister Gordon Brown less than 24 hours after what many analysts believe was the Labour leader’s make-or-break speech to the party conference in Manchester. The Member of Parliament for Bolton West confirmed that she would be leaving the Cabinet in order […]
West Ham and Fulham crash out of the Carling Cup
West Ham’s new manager Gianfranco Zola came down to earth following a win at the weekend with the Hammers crashing out of the Carling Cup at Vicarage Road thanks to a Hayden Mullins own goal. Fulham is another premiership side from the capital also making a third round exit going down to a late winner […]
Zimbabwe stalemate an opportunity for Zanu-PF
While many sceptics believe the deal engineered by President Thabo Mbeki would afford Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe the opportunity to again outwit his opponents and carry on regardless, this is completely divorced from the reality. In fact, the country has ground to a standstill while Mugabe and those still loyal to him attempt to cling […]
Premiership: Nigerian group to acquire Newcastle and reinstate Keegan
Sky news are suggesting that a Nigerian group are in the process of trying to acquire Newcastle United from chairman Mike Ashley. Should the deal go through they will be reinstating Kevin Keegan as manager. UEFA president Michel Platini in a newspaper interview has strongly criticised Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger for having a business rather […]
President Mbeki and the hornets’ nest
Once upon a time in a land far, far away there lived a president who was much loved and yet much maligned by his flock. While some considered him very, very good, others thought he was very, very bad and suggested that he take leave of them and flock off. This was very confusing to […]
Draw at Stamford Bridge leaves Gunners on top
Arsenal were in irresistible form at the Reebok on Saturday, overturning an early Kevin Davies goal to run out 3-1 winners. They looked like the Gooners of last season and, while they’re back on top, the fear is that once again there are too many babies in the side. On current form the only sides […]
Mbeki recall and Nicholson’s judgement are not closure
One of the primary catalysts for ousting President Thabo Mbeki has been cited as the attempt to seek the repeal or reversal of the judgement handed down by Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Chris Nicholson — the decision to challenge that part of the judgement which indicated that Mbeki had interfered in the prosecution of ANC […]
ANC recalls Mbeki: unity or something else?
Gwede Mantashe, secretary-general of the African National Congress, has confirmed that the National Executive Committee had reached consensus in the early hours of Saturday morning to recall national President Thabo Mbeki. Mbeki is not expected to fight the recall although the Constitution does not provide the steps that would need to be taken to implement […]
Save the Scorpions, kill the press leaks
As my regular readers know, the survival of the Scorpions as well as special police units like Organised Crime, has been one of my priorities over the past year. This arises not only from having dealt with many of their people and being able to appreciate their professionalism but also as a result of our […]
Jake White plays for Sarla against Scottish Legends
I had to laugh when I spoke to Jake who was in Bloemfontein to attend Os du Randt’s benefit dinner. They had just returned from Scotland where our legends played theirs. He was a man in pain. Read about it here: jakewhiterugby.blogspot.com/2008/09/on-playing-fields-of-scotland.html
NPA decision on Zuma is right
In light of the judgment of Judge Chris Nicholson in Pietermaritzburg on Friday the National Prosecuting Authority was left with little choice but to appeal the decision. As things stand a prima facie case on the merits exists against the ANC president and if the NPA were to fail to proceed with it, it would […]
