When I chatted to Peter de Villiers in Soweto on Monday I told him how proud I was of his achievement in beating the British and Irish Lions the Saturday before which sentiment of course applies to “Mr Naughty” Dick Muir and Gary Gold. Unless my memory fails me prior to Pete and company we’ve […]

Let Michael Jackson finally rest in peace
At 02h00 this morning I filed an article on the Sentinel site confirming that Michael Jackson had died. It’s now about 02h05 and I can’t sleep. Watching Sky News I can already see that there are going to be a billion conspiracy theories and the whole family including his young children are going to be […]
Bafana were brilliant now reinstate Mokoena SABC
As you will see from the match report below I was of the firm belief that Bafana Bafana were absolutely magnificent against Brazil last night and are now as much a source of pride to the nation as our cricket and rugby teams. There is no doubt that Joel Santana has achieved this and with […]
N Korea threatens US; missile launch anticipated
Days after US President Barack Obama advised the media that America was prepared for anything that Pyongyang could throw at it comes war talk from the government of North Korea. “North Korea threatened Wednesday to wipe the United States off the map as Washington and its allies watched for signs the regime will launch a […]
West must lift sanctions on Zimbabwe
If regard is had to the approach being taken by US President Barack Obama in respect of dictatorships in general and the ongoing crisis in Iran in particular, then the decision to persist with sanctions against Zimbabwe is not only unfair, it’s cruel. In his new approach to foreign policy Obama has made it clear […]
Zuma’s inaugural dream becomes a reality
The last time I appeared in Protea Glen, Soweto, it was in court as a criminal attorney defending a man charged with murdering his fiancee. On that occasion hundreds of demonstrators harassed both the client and I as we attempted to seek justice from the magistrate rather than a mob. It turned out to be […]
Italian team a ‘disgrace’ as they snub Soweto kids
Yesterday I covered one of the most uplifting events in the history of South African sport and race relations. It was the launch of the Lucas Radebe Sustainable Legacy Park in Protea Glen, Soweto, sponsored by Blue Label Telecoms and put together by the South African Rugby Legends Association (Sarla). It was a wonderful occasion […]
SADC’s hypocrisy over Madagascar
The SADC is meeting in South Africa on Saturday in order to try and “restore political order” to the ongoing strife in Madagascar. International efforts at mediation have broken down and the Southern African Development Community are hearing report backs from the mediators who took part in the talks. The SADC suspended Madagascar during March, […]
Obama’s honeymoon period is over
With Reuters reporting a growing concern among Americans at US President Barack Obama’s government spending, automobile industry bailout and other economic policies, set against the backdrop of former president George Bush taking a swipe at his successor, perhaps it is appropriate to call time on Obama’s honeymoon period. Yesterday the president announced the overhaul of […]
North Korea: Don’t cough, we might get nuked
I’ve been keeping a careful eye on Pyongyang for a few years now and the more I see the more nervous I get. Their latest utterings, in response to US President Barack Obama suggesting that they are a “grave threat”, are the most ominous to date and indicate that where once their conduct might have […]
Iranian protests confirm ANC on right track with media freedom
Iran is currently witnessing the most violent demonstrations it has seen since the Islamic Revolution itself. Protesters in Tehran and further afield are pouring out onto the streets despite the government declaring protests illegal. Foreign journalists, in the country for the elections, are describing police brutality and even deaths among protesters as hostility increases. The […]
Zuma must be supported in his accord for dictators
The biggest stumbling block in post-colonial Africa’s progress towards democracy has been the steadfast refusal of its dictators to relinquish power. Much of this can be attributed to the fact that should they be forced to relinquish power they are, more likely than not, going to be facing charges of genocide, crimes against humanity or […]
