Being forced to use the active voice and cutting the verb “to be” from our speech can nudge us towards being more accountable — and clearer
Ruby de Lanerolle
Ruby de Lanerolle is an 18-yearold South African, currently studying at the United World College of the Adriatic in Italy, a school with students from 80 different countries and a multitude of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. She is a co-founder of Ukuzibuza, an online multimedia publication aiming to give voice to the ideas and creative expressions of young people. Ruby has played a role developing the policy for institutional transformation at UWC Adriatic and previously at St John’s College. This work has focused on furthering the principles of anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion. Ruby’s interests lie in how ideas of philosophy and studies of the mind can be applied to the understanding and dismantling of oppression.
