Muslim children attending madrassa are taught from a very early age about the role of a mother and the respect we need to accord them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon Him) once said:
Your Heaven lies under the feet of your mother (related by Ahmad, narrated by Nasai).
At another occasion a man came to the Prophet (peace be unto Him) and said: O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my good companionship? The Prophet said: Your mother. The man said: Then who? The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man further asked: Then who? The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man asked again: Then who? The Prophet said: Then your father. (Bukhari, Muslim).

Despite all that is in the public domain about how Muslim men ill-treat their women, this is really the basis for a man’s conduct towards a woman. What is happening in especially Islamic countries is actually an atrocity against Islam. Every woman has the potential from birth to be a mother. And all mothers need to be treated the way you would treat your own mother. Provided of course that you have a very good relationship with your own mother.
Since our National Women’s Day falls in the month of August, it has become customary to refer to August as Women’s Month. But what does that really say? Are we going to revert back as of September 1? Okay, maybe September 2 since we are now celebrating spring day!
Why should the elevation of our women folk be confined to one day or, at the most, one month? Are we not supposed to celebrate the role of women in society every day?
A woman once said in a conversation that men would never understand what a woman goes through when in labour. My answer to that? Maybe a man was never intended to understand that. Women occupy a special place in society and we need to respect, protect and defend the honour of our women — every day of the year. Once we start telling ourselves that we need only to celebrate women during August, we have failed already in this crucial duty.
Let’s celebrate our wonderful women 24 hours of every single day!
