  • The South African Broadcasting Corporation’s mandate requires it to act in the public interest, but the public service broadcaster’s mandate and the Act that covers it do not formally require it to engage directly with citizens or keep them fully informed of major decisions that could affect service delivery.

    In light of the recent controversies surrounding the SABC board, and suspension of both its group chief executive and head of news, tell us how you expect the SABC should be interpreting its public-interest mandate with respect to its engagement with the country’s citizens — its licence-fee payers.

    The Media Monitoring Project, in cooperation with the Mail & Guardian Online, together with civil society partners, including Misa South Africa, will be incorporating your responses into a memorandum of demands and expectations that will be presented to the SABC board and Parliament.
