Irony.

This was a word that was passed around quite a lot this past weekend. I am quite sure that the readers of this prestigious blog space are quite learned and know what the word means. For effect, though, I shall add the definition as defined by Dictionary.com.

ioroony [ahy-ruh-nee, ahy-er-] — noun, plural -nies.
1. The use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning.

Now that we have got that out of the way, I can carry on.

So, yes, this was the word thrown all over this weekend — and if I never hear it again it would be too soon.

Now, detox. Yet again, my learned friends, I acknowledge, that you may know the meaning of this term fully but I shall provide you with the meaning:

Detoxification: This is a process in which the body is allowed to free itself of a drug. During this period, the symptoms of withdrawal are also treated. Detoxification is the primary step in any drug-treatment programme, and is used as the initial phase in treating alcohol, heroin, inhalant, sedative, and hypnotic addictions.

Now we can move on even further. I promise this will all make sense in a minute.

For the average (is there even such?) party person, the weekend is usually divided like this: on Friday you never really have to go that big. You can even stay home if you want and watch Chuck Norris or Jean-Claude van Damme movies on SABC1. Saturday is the “go big or go home” part of the weekend and Sunday the more chilled day where detoxification (detox) comes in.

This was not so this past weekend after I attended a “detox” session at Berlin on Seventh Street in Melville.

You gotta love Jozi people. Take one session away from them and they go start and bigger and better one somewhere else.

Just for some background. There used to be a place in town, on Delvers Street, to be exact, called Mind Your Head. This was the spot where your more discerning music lover (its tag line used to be “Transcending pop culture”) hung out and met other discerning music lovers. Due to complications with drainage, the place had to close and there is talk of it coming back in a different form somewhere else. We are holding thumbs.

Okay, so out of Mind Your Head we have the DJs who played there and they have moved into Berlin and created a party session similar to Mind Your Head. Just that it’s on a Sunday and, well, there is a smidgeon of pop culture in there, if you ask me…

Now we have something to look forward to every weekend. Detox Sundays. This is where the irony comes in … they are anything but. This is a full-blown party! On a Sunday! Unless you make a conscious decision to drink nothing but water, which is rather hard with the throngs of people milling about and the beats in the background, that sort of environment does not call for such. Rather cross the street and have a relaxing night at Soi.
