The London Olympics have come and gone, and while the sports world is readjusting to a world without them, for South Africa it has been the most successful Games since readmission.
Chad le Clos and Cameron van der Burgh have rightly been lauded for their efforts in the pool, but a knowledgeable number of people knew of their potential to bring back gold. It was the rowers who blew the minds of SA fans, their outstanding performance came out of nowhere.
Caster Semenya showed the world she was far from a finished force, especially after her disgusting treatment by the IAAF after the 2009 World Championships. Gold is certainly a possibility for her, as are several for Le Clos in Rio 2016. Van der Burgh could also defend his title.
Credit should also go to Bridgitte Hartley for her bronze, further proving that when it comes to natural talent, South Africans have it, if not the financial backing their competitors receive.
It was a great two weeks for South Africa, and even though some of our other athletes did not come back with medals, their commitment did this country proud. The fact SA finished the top African nation was also a feather in the cap of Team SA.
With all the nonsense going on within our borders, moments like these remind us of what it means to be a South African in the world. Rio 2016 cannot get here soon enough.
