So perplexed was I about the allegations flying around on this site that white boys don’t watch PSL, that I called a referendum of Dirty Sanchez to test this theory. I included all core members regardless of race to ensure that the results weren’t controlled by subversive umlungu colonial-types.
Here are my results, with names changed to protect identities:
Shaun: Why does everyone blow through beer funnels at PSL games? Why don’t people realise that those funnel things are the best devices for drinking a beer in under 20 seconds? If people realised this they would drink more and blow less. I would watch more if people drank more.
Pedro: Of course I watch the Portuguese football channel! What else is on 24/7 in my place?
Simphiwe: Bucs are my team, only because my dad and uncles are supporters. Last time I checked some Bibey guy was the coach, and Vilakazi was in their midfield?
Mike: Nah, don’t watch. You know I only watch soccer with you guys because I have nothing else to do on Saturday and you are the only people in Jozi who will still talk to me.
Pete: I was at school with Kaizer Jnr if that counts?
Graham: I got comps to the Pirates-Chiefs game three years ago, but I gave them to the security guard because I was scared of going into Soweto. It’s a crime hot-spot, you know. Didn’t want to lose my Beemer and I heard this rumour that Tracker doesn’t work in the townships. I’ve just installed SATNAV if that helps?
Avi: My uncle used to own 10% of a company that owned 3% of another company that had a claim to 12% per cent of Manning Rangers. The Maulers were my family business you know, but that bloody second uncle of mine cheated us out of the control of the club. Chokes me up to think that it’s all gone. Haven’t watched a game since that long Greek striker left for Europe.
Mpho: Only kasi guys watch PSL. Us Model C’s, we watch European football.
There you have it. A not-so-considered response to a badly-played race card that not-so-empirically proves that a heterogeneous group of football fans aren’t regular PSL watchers. Instead of playing race cards willy-nilly, why don’t we concentrate on serious issues like the standard of the visual and audio quality of PSL broadcast, the timing of the screening of matches, and an ad campaign that doesn’t give the impression that private broadcasters consider PSL second-rate to European leagues?
