Enough about the Confederations Cup now. Let’s talk women. Seriously, I’ve heard a lot of “oooh, he is so cute” to last me until the 2010 World Cup. And I’m not player hating.
So, Sis Ria Ledwaba once suggested that women footballers should wear skirts and look more like women. It seems Bra Irvin Khoza never took her serious. C’mon Bra Irvin. Some of us are relatively young and very much open-minded to attractive women’s football.
Ok, slow down now. Do we really have to go there? This has absolutely nothing to do with the FACT that sex sells. And you know it. In fact, if the concept was true, there would be more women at football matches than men.
Hypothetically speaking, I have just proved that I’m not a pervert but you are free to disagree.
Save to say, this topic came to mind when I was discussing ladies’ football with Councillor Julia Nkwenyane of the DA in Rustenburg. She owns a ladies’ football team called “The Dreamers”, which is made up of homeless girls. They have a lot of challenges (shelter, food, soccer kit, balls, education etc) and seriously need assistance. The team recently performed very well, coming third in the local mayoral tournament.
Sis Julia argues passionately that some of these kids would probably have been pregnant by now if it were not for football. It has given them hope and a new life. I would really like to appeal to our patriotic philanthropists to consider “The Dreamers” in future (psst … anyone seen Mr Patrice Motsepe around?)
The Fifa Activity Report of 2008/2009 claims that “women’s football remains a top priority” for the organisation and that their 2008 plan focused on “technical and educational development programmes using pilot initiatives and tailor-made approaches for the member associations”. They go on to boldly state that “2009 will be the year of implantation” and taking “a step up in quality”.
I suppose Sis Ria’s argument could fall under the umbrella of “quality”. Have you ever wondered why so many men love watching ladies’ tennis? Just listen to Cebo Manyaapelo’s (SABC/Motsweding FM) regular blushes over Maria Sharapova and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. Trust me, I know the feeling. Back in my secondary school days I was ever so nuts about Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.
Maybe now I’ve grown up, but I’m still not a pervert. In all honesty, I love women, more especially those in my life. So, Bra Irvin (and Mr Motsepe) don’t you think it’s time we gentlemen show some love to the sisters? *wink*
PS: If you ever consider my request, I have an idea for the campaign. Let’s call it: “Real Men Watch Women’s Football!”
