A friend of mine won an autographed Bafana Bafana T-shirt. There were 20 glasses of different beers. Could he pick out Castle Lager? He did, and he won. I so wish winning was that simple, because I would probably be a gambling addict.

So then, what would it take for one to have the guts to risk their hard-earned loot betting on football matches? Who really plays SportStake, Soccer 6 and others? Has anyone ever won, and if so, how much? Vice versa, what would be the most amount of money that one has ever lost?

I think about it this way. If I had placed bets on the recent Confederations Cup tournament, I would never have bet on an unknown Iraqi squad (86) holding Bafana Bafana (77) to a draw, USA (15) whipping Spain (1), and Egypt (37) stunning Italy (5)? Definitely not! And I have this feeling that a lot of folks lost a lot of their hard-earned loot.

Anyway, back to the beer story. Now, this is a competition I could win any day. If only the “bugger” had invited me to the event. His name is Spara Modise, and he is the midweek afternoon drive host at Radio Mafisa in Rustenburg.

You see, I can proudly state that I know my beer so much, that I could disprove that the founder brewer of Castle Lager is in fact not Charles, but his wife, Sylvia Glass. Truth be told, men had no business with stoves, ovens or pots back in the 19th century. And if statistics and historical social dynamics are to be believed, Charles was probably a chauvinist, beer-swivelling, pipe-smoking slave driver. But don’t quote me on that.

For now, I’ll raise my glass (and money) to Sylvia.
