This week’s massive release of US diplomatic cables has dominated much of our news space. For some it is a breach of security by traitors. For others it is the act of a hero. The dawn of a new information age. For me it is just another example of us getting played. Not a single person involved in the action is acting from a pure honour. No one is doing this for the greater good.
The US don’t like the information being free because it means they can’t bitch and moan about their “idiot” friends and “moronic” enemies behind closed doors.
The rest of the world’s governments don’t want it coming out because it makes them look like fools, makes them seem petty in their deals.
Julian Assange wants the information to be free to feed his ego. He likes the power. By all accounts he runs WikiLeaks like his own personal fiefdom. Doing all the same things he accuses the governments of the world of doing.
The media and journos of the world want the info to fill their newspapers, to write that next great column, to write that next Pulitzer, to rise through the ranks and become king of the hill.
And that is the lesson. Everyone wants a piece. Everyone wants power. And they will snake each other to get it. Julian Assange, emperor of the leak, Mrs Clinton and her band of merry chiefs, the media barons and their marching bands. Everyone wants to make a dime, or ten billion. Everyone wants to rule the world.
And we just sit at the bottom lapping it up.
