So King Kenny goes back to Anfield and gees up the troops to pull fingers from Scouse (and international) arse and get going.

And what happens next? Chelsea reminds them of their place in the 2011 pecking order. A cheeky cash up-front offer for their best player and talisman. Sure they’ve rejected it, but Chelsea are desperate and have the money to fund that desperation.

Liverpool’s new owners may be all about instilling that big-club feeling back at Anfield, but everybody has their price. John W Henry is a sensible, if patient businessman. Roman Abramovich gets his kicks watching his Chelsea side steamroller teams, something which has not been happening a lot lately. He will not hesitate to throw money at the problem and re-establish his side as a premier financial force.

Liverpool could sell Torres now, get Suarez in and hope he can spearhead a charge into the Europa League places. Maybe use the rest of the money to strengthen in the summer. They could keep Torres, have him propel them back to what they consider a respectable finish, only to be dealt a blow when he leaves in the summer. Liverpool need money, Torres will want to play at the highest level possible and Chelsea, once more, are desperate.

King Kenny is back, but he rules over a vastly different landscape.
