Embattled police commissioner Riah Phiyega has come forward to explain the “eat your heart out” reference made in an SMS sent to DA MP Dianne Kohler-Barnard. Speaking via SMS, SA’s top cop said she heard the saying during a “Nigella show” and thought it would be applicable. She went on to explain the entire SMS with:

Phiyega Emojis5

(I am black, proud, capable and get it clear you can take nothing from me eat your heart out. I am not made by you and can not be undone by you.)

Phiyega said she definitely aimed to reflect on the SMS and might change it to “can not be hurt by you” but she’s not sure. She might also add *stars* to make the message sound less threatening.

SABC chief operations officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng meanwhile joined the conversation saying: “This is hardly surprising the media always takes everything out of con-text. Haha”

He added journalists should come up with their own SMSs to print and not “plagiarise” from high-ranking officials. He ended with Emojis7which could be translated as “speak no evil” or “my tooth hurts”.

The COO failed to clarify his statement.
